
New solidarity funds could ringfence finance for loss and damage

Saleemul Huq was the director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) in Bangladesh, until he passed away in October 2023.
He set up the climate change research group at IIED in 2000 and was its initial director.
An expert on the links between climate change and sustainable development, particularly from the perspective of developing countries, he was the lead author of the chapter on Adaptation and Sustainable Development in the third assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and was the lead author of the chapter on Adaptation and Mitigation in the IPCC's fourth assessment report. He also contributed to the fifth assessment report, with the IPCC being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
He was awarded the 2020 National Environment Award by the Bangladesh government, and an OBE by the Queen in 2022 for his services to combating international climate change.
