Incentive-based Hilsa fish conservation and management in Bangladesh: prospects and challenges
This workshop was held as part of a project that aims to reduce overfishing of the Hilsa fish in Bangladesh through a payment for ecosystem services (PES) programme. The Hilsa fish is of national importance to Bangladesh yet increased demand through South Asia has led to pressure on the fish species. PES is often seen as an effective form of conservation yet there are still many knowledge gaps to address. The workshop brought together representatives from different interest groups to gather their perspectives on;~The effectiveness of the incentive-based conservation mechanism.~The role of the mechanism in poverty alleviation.~The role of the mechanism in Hilsa fish conservation.~The contribution of Hilsa fishery to the national economy.~Identification of some critical limiting factors that inhibit~the effectiveness of the scheme.
