The relationship between natural resource contracts and sustainable
development is receiving increasing attention around the world. There are many reasons to focus on that relationship in Kazakhstan. They include the significance of the oil and gas sector in Kazakhstan’s economy overall and relative to global trends; the country’s extensive experience in the negotiation and implementation of a variety of natural resource governance
arrangements; the increasing policy interest in corporate social responsibility and sustainable development, and the presence of significant interest in civil society and among expert analysts in the issues.
