Language is powerful. In multilateral agreements, every word is chosen strategically and with intent. This is especially true in climate change negotiations, where acronyms, buzzwords and legal terms can be complex, overwhelming, and, at times, even misleading.

This short document collects and defines some of the most essential terms used in climate negotiations, and is a summary version of a longer guide to climate negotiations terminology that will shortly be published by IIED. Both this summary and the longer guide are supporting tools to better understand and use language in the UNFCCC negotiations.
