Among the issues that stunt the move towards proper solid waste management (SWM), and which have received little research attention is the role of conflict and criminal activities in the sector. This paper begins to fill that gap by exploring conflict and crime in the context of municipal solid waste management in Kenya’s two major cities of Mombasa and Nairobi, with Nairobi dominating the evidence base given the entrenched cartels in the city’s SWM sector.
