Cristina Pita

Principal researcher and team leader, Shaping Sustainable Markets

Cristina is a specialist in fisheries, with a strong focus on small-scale fisheries, sustainable seafood markets, marine resource management, marine governance and coastal cultural heritage. She takes part on several international committees and international networks. She also integrates the pool of experts in socioeconomic aspects of fisheries for the United Nations World Ocean Assessment (UN-WOAII).

Expertise

Commercial fisheries (especially small-scale fisheries), marine recreational fisheries, aquaculture, seafood markets and market tools, sustainable use of marine resources, coastal governance, coastal community development.

Before IIED
  • Principal researcher in the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), Portugal
  • Invited assistant professor at the University of Aveiro, Portugal
  • Co-leader of CESAM’s marine ecosystems and resources research line
  • Leader of the Coastal and Ocean Planning and Governance (COPING) group
  • Part of several international committees in the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (e.g., ICES-SOCIAL, ICES-WGRMES, ICES- WGCEPH, ICES-SIHD)
  • Member of the management committee of two COST actions (OCEANGOV and MARCONS)
  • Part of the pool of national experts for the United Nations World Ocean Assessment (UN-WOAII), as an expert in socioeconomic aspects of fisheries
