Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, delivered the third Barbara Ward Lecture at the Commonwealth Club, London, in May 2010.

The speech begins: It is a great honour to be invited to give this lecture in memory of a remarkable lady. Economist, environmentalist, historian, journalist, author and adviser to governments, Barbara Ward was clearly a true polymath and one of the very first people to identify the need for sustainable development long before it was given that name. Directly and indirectly, Barbara Ward's influence has clearly been immense, and today it lives on not only through her many books but also through the work of the International Institute for Environment and Development. The European Commission is pleased to be co-funding a number of IIED's activities.
