Farmers derive information from multiple sources, including other farmers, traders, input suppliers, outreach workers, and formal research institutions. These actors comprise agricultural communication networks. These communication networks are an integral part of farming systems, yet are seldom seen as researchable, or an integral part of development. An approach has been developed in three countries to identify these communication networks, and to assess their performance. This paper examines this work, and the issues it has highlighted.
