This case study from Ghana is the second of six case studies on tactics that improve internal governance prepared by forest and farm producer organisations (FFPOs) for the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF).

It describes the actions of the Kokoo Pa Farmers Association based in Kwadaso South East in the Kumasi region of Ghana. Established in 2009 with 352 farmers from Ahafo Ano North and Ahafo Ano South districts, Kokoo Pa now boasts a membership of 10,300 farmers across Ashanti, Brong, Ahafo and Western North regions, with 30% being women. The core aim of the association is promoting sustainable cocoa practices based on UTZ-certified standards. Since inception, approximately 85% of its members have attained UTZ certification.

Good internal governance has been critical to the success of Kokoo Pa. This case study describes innovative tactics in governance structures, processes and practices. One notable structural innovation has been the formation of women’s groups in the various communities alongside the existing Kokoo Pa group. This was to help the women to discuss issues of concern to them and build their capacity to take up leadership roles in the association.
