This working paper reports on the complex risks, challenges, adaptations and aspirations of informal workers and settlement dwellers in Indore, the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh.

India’s economic growth is concentrating in urban areas, where informal employment plays a huge role. Yet informal workers remain marginalised, including in their health, living conditions and economic prospects.

We present measures to enhance informal workers’ resilience to climate change and other risks, which could be adopted in India and in other developing countries. These interventions can advance several Sustainable Development Goals, notably SDG 11 on cities, SDG 13 on climate action, and SDG 8 on economic growth.
