Understanding the social impacts of protected areas: a community perspective

This research report provides an overview of the Social Assessment for Protected Areas (SAPA) methodology and describes the results of SAPA’s application at four protected area sites: Ruwenzori Mountains National Park (Uganda), Mumbwa Game Management Area (Zambia), Mont de Cristal National Park (Gabon), and Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Kenya). The case studies provide a practical illustration of the kind of information that is generated by SAPA, and the report reflects more broadly on the results in relation to conservation practice at the site level, and international policy goals and targets for enhancing the effectiveness and equity of protected area management and governance.
