US to repeal climate 'endangerment finding'

Following reports that the US Environmental Protection Agency is to announce the repeal of its 'endangerment finding' relating to greenhouse gas emissions, Tom Mitchell, executive director of IIED, said:

Press release, 12 February 2026

"Greenhouse gas emissions do harm people's health, whether politicians want to admit it or not.

"IIED research has shown how all the biggest cities in the US are getting hotter, and that very hot weather now begins earlier and ends later in the year than it used to. The number of weather-related disasters is also rising, we have found.

"These problems have very real consequences for human health – often affecting the poorest people the most – and the health of a country's economy. Americans deserve to have their wellbeing taken seriously by their government, just like everyone else.

"You can repeal a rule but you can't repeal reality. Treating extreme weather as an ideological football instead of a practical challenge we can solve does nothing to help anyone."
