Carina Bachofen leads IIED’s climate, monitoring, evaluation and learning, and gender cluster of work, championing high-quality, ethical research and equitable partnerships. She plays a central role in organisational strategy, governance, and team performance, ensuring research delivers real-world impact.

Carina also represents IIED externally, strengthening strategic partnerships and advancing the institute’s priority agendas through thought leadership and communications. Carina plays a key role in institutional fundraising and strategic resource diversification to secure IIED’s long-term financial sustainability.

Having spent two decades at the interface of climate, development and humanitarian issues, Carina has led global teams and is skilled in designing and implementing organisational strategies and multi-stakeholder work programmes connecting global ambition to local action and policy to practice.

Before IIED

Prior to joining IIED as convenor of the Green Economy Coalition, Carina spent more than a decade as policy lead and in senior leadership positions at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre. She has also consulted for the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
