We are an independent policy research organisation based in the UK and active in five continents through an extended network of partners. And as a growing organisation, we are often on the lookout for professional and creative people with a passion for our mission. Find out more about IIED.

Editor-in-chief

Environment and Urbanization (E&U) seeks to advance a more socially just and environmentally sustainable urban world through the provision of knowledge. Published since 1989, it is one of the most widely read and distributed journals in its field.

The editor-in-chief provides editorial leadership for E&U, working in close partnership with IIED and the managing editor to shape the journal's strategic direction and editorial programme. Responsibilities include editorial decision-making and support, convening journal stakeholders – including the advisory board, associate editors, relevant IIED staff and sister journal Medio Ambiente y Urbanización – and representing E&U externally.

The editor-in-chief leads on the identification and development of special issues, guidance for guest editorial teams and associate editors, in addition to working closely with the managing editor on day-to-day editorial decisions and peer-review advice. They also serve as a backstop across all aspects of the journal's operation.

We are seeking a senior research academic with a substantial publication record focused on urbanisation and urban development in the global South. The successful candidate will have strong theoretical and empirical expertise in urban development in the Majority World, and a familiarity with Environment and Urbanization and its audience.

Substantial prior experience as a journal editor is essential. Candidates should be comfortable providing both strategic direction and hands-on editorial guidance, and should have experience working with diverse international academic communities.

This is a volunteer role that receives a modest stipend. The appointment will be for an initial term of five years.

Associate editors

E&U is recruiting up to two associate editors with complementary domains of expertise.

The associate editors work closely with the editor-in-chief and managing editor to support the journal's editorial programme.

Associate editors play a hands-on role in the editorial process across both special issues and the journal's standing sections. For special issues, this includes reviewing submissions ahead of and in parallel with peer review, advising on the suitability of reviewers, coordinating with guest editorial teams and working with authors through the revision process. Associate editors also take a lead role in the journal's feedback section – papers that respond to themes covered in previous issues – including reviewing submissions and contributing to the relevant section of the editorial.

Candidates should indicate two to three areas of domain expertise relevant to the journal's scope that they would be comfortable covering.

This is a volunteer role that receives a modest stipend in recognition of service. This is an initial appointment for up to five years.
