How to ensure that aid empowers urban poor groups
Listen to David Satterthwaite speaking at TEDxHamburg on how to ensure aid empowers urban poor groups.
David Satterthwaite, a senior fellow with IIED’s Human settlements group, spoke at TEDxHamburg City 2.0, which invited “movers, shakers and visionaries of this world to present their ideas and projects that are already, or will be, changing the future of our cities and ultimately our lives.”
Satterthwaite begins by talking about the international aid system. “This whole system is legitimated on the needs of the people. Yet, are any of the policy decisions ever accountable to them? Is any agency accountable to low income groups? Sadly no. I want to dream about another way,” he says.
Satterthwaite talks about an alternative: funds that urban poor organisations can apply to directly citing the Urban Poor Fund International and the Asian Coalition for Community action as examples.
