Clandestine subsidies

Lots of attention has been given to stemming direct fossil fuel subsidies (with limited progress), including through G20 processes, but vast subsidies exist for other climate-damaging industries too.

Subsidies to help commercial agricultural, animal feed supplies, manufacture of steel, cement and concrete, for example, are not well known, nor the subsidies that aid maladaptation.

This area highlights the sheer scale at which governments are subsidising climate ‘bads’ beyond fossil fuels, and builds coalitions for action on reversing those without strong rationale.
