In January/February 2024, an international workshop held in Nanyuki, Kenya aimed to establish a road map to provide support for the delivery of more equitable governance and respect for rights in area-based conservation.
Designed to ensure a diversity of perspectives and voices, the event brought together 47 people from across 24 countries, representing Indigenous Peoples' networks and organisations, human rights organisations specialising in land and resource rights, conservation organisations, community conservation initiatives, UN agencies and major conservation funders and advocacy groups.
The workshop participants reviewed opportunities to advance the recognition of rights and advance equity in area-based conservation, across different contexts and models and with specific reference to Target 3 and related elements of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This road map details the actions considered by participants to be most critical in creating momentum towards advancing rights and equity at all levels.
