Finance for nature and climate: shared learning on common challenges

A practitioner-turned-researcher, Pia’s work focuses on improving the adaptation options of the world’s most vulnerable people, informed by her experiences working on climate change in the international development sector.
Pia Treichel was also a senior researcher (climate finance and locally led adaptation), in IIED's Climate Change research group until April 2025.
Specialist on international finance for climate change adaptation, with over 15 years’ experience working on climate and development topics, including the international climate negotiations, climate finance, vulnerability and justice issues.
Before IIED, Pia was a researcher and lecturer at the University of Melbourne and Monash University while undertaking her PhD, which explored the political economy of the Green Climate Fund – the largest of the funding mechanisms under the international climate agreements – as a means of explaining its climate change adaptation portfolio and the associated justice implications. Over this time, Pia also undertook research consultancies for a variety of development-focused organisations, including Oxfam, Save the Children, and the Overseas Development Institute.
Prior to that, Pia was an adaptation specialist with Plan International Australia, delivering child-centred adaptation programs. Earlier, Pia was at the United Nations Development Programme, focused on climate change.
