Forest Governance Learning Group Update - May 2009
Over the last year, FGLG’s 10 country teams have intensified their efforts to improve forest governance in Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Indonesia, India and Vietnam. Impacts of this work include:
- A surge of claims for control of forests by communities under the Forest Rights Act in India ~- New policy to legitimise and support community forestry at district level in Indonesia ~- Government strategy, initiatives and tools for small forestry enterprises in South Africa ~- Intense debate and a search for constructive solutions for the charcoal trade in Malawi ~- Key ‘hooks’ for more locally beneficial forest management in the Voluntary Partnership Agreement on forest governance signed in 2008 between Ghana and the EC
This 7th Forest Governance Learning Group Update describes activities and their impacts over the last year, and some of the plans ahead.
