About our Publications Library

Article

Since 2005 the Publications Library has provided an online repository for the extensive research carried out by IIED. By the start of 2022, this ever-growing resource contained almost 7,500 publications, the vast majority of which are available to download free of charge.

These range from briefings that offer key findings and policy recommendations about an issue to more detailed case studies and research reports. We also produce the leading journal Environment & Urbanization.

Wherever possible, our publication pages include a link to where more detailed information about our work in that specific area is available, plus further related publications.

Choosing and reusing our content

We publish the results of our research in a variety of ways to suit different audiences and needs. Those interested in key policy recommendations and who might be short of time might prefer our policy ‘briefings’ or ‘backgrounder’ factsheets that provide an easy-to-understand brief introduction to an issue.

Alternatively, those who want something more in-depth can select from our range of longer research publications, such as case studies and reports. We also produce toolkits designed to present methods and tactics that are ready-for-use. A number of our outputs, such as issue papers and country reports, are peer reviewed before being published.

All IIED website content, and that of IIED publications, may be shared and republished in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Public License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) unless specifically indicated otherwise.

We like to know where our work is being used so we can inform our authors and partners, so please do email newbooks@iied.org with information about where you are referencing or reusing IIED content. If you have any queries about reusing content, including in ways that contradict our chosen licence, please also make contact with us at newbooks@iied.org

Ordering

Links to buy printed copies appear on pages where this option is available. These will take you to the relevant publisher and their distributor.

If you wish to receive print copies of publications, email newbooks@iied.org with details of the publication you wish to order. Our environmental policy and efforts to avoid waste mean we don’t automatically print multiple copies of all our publications.

We will send copies subject to stock availability and may charge postage and packing costs, although due to the COVID-19 pandemic we are currently unable to post print copies of any publications.

Occasionally, IIED publishes through external publishers, including: Routledge, Zed Books, Sage and Springer.

Limited numbers of evaluation copies are available. Please contact us if you wish to review any of our new publications by providing the title and ISBN of the book(s) requested together with your full postal address and specify the publication in which the review will appear.

We would also hope to receive a copy of the published review in due course, preferably in electronic format. Email newbooks@iied.org with all of the above details.

Publishing

We accept submissions for the journal Environment & Urbanization – to make a submission, please visit the relevant section on its website.

IIED is not an external publishing service, so please don't send manuscripts or publishing proposals.
