IIED recognises the ongoing impact of colonisation and systemic inequalities, and is working to dismantle barriers that silence or exclude marginalised communities and individuals.
Why it matters
Embedding equity, inclusion and justice strengthens IIED’s work with communities around the world.
By listening to diverse voices and challenging harmful systems, IIED helps shape policies and practices that create lasting, inclusive change in the fields of environment and development. This approach also builds a stronger, more supportive workplace for IIED’s staff.
IIED’s equity, inclusion and justice (EIJ) strategy sets out how the organisation will embed these principles across all areas of its work.
Following a race audit (PDF) in 2022, IIED introduced a new governance structure, created the equity, inclusion and justice committee, and expanded staff networks to focus on race, decolonisation and gender justice.
Our accreditations
IIED has achieved two significant accreditations that demonstrate its commitment to equity and inclusion:
- Race at Work Charter: a pledge to tackle racial inequalities through actions such as leadership accountability, transparent ethnicity data reporting and supporting diverse career progression
- Disability Confident Committed: recognition of IIED’s work to create an inclusive and accessible workplace, including offering interviews to qualified disabled candidates and providing reasonable adjustments.
