Having explained environmental and developmental problems through the media in the 1970s, having explored the causes of these problems through research reports in the 1980s, and having identified solutions with partners in the 1990s, IIED has by now produced a mountain of evidence. For the 2000s, IIED intends a major thrust to support the practical application of solutions.

All our work must both account for and influence the incredible changes taking place today — the tension between globalisation and localisation which is opening up new opportunities and threats, but for which the right institutions are not yet in place. We are extending our alliances and research skills to get to grips with the increasingly important issues of political economy, global institutions, finance, trade and climate.

IIED's work is divided into five main groups:
