Sahel becomes IED Afrique
This is Independence Day !! As you may all have been aware of, IIED Sahel has been engaged over the last 2 years, in a strategic reflection process aimed at setting up an independent organisation. Thanks to the very strong support from the Drylands Programme and IIED as a whole, this process has come to its final step and I am very pleased to announce that as of September 1st, 2005, we have become an independent organisation named IED Afrique (Innovations, Environnement et Développement). This name reflects both continuity ( as environment and development will remain our main areas of focus), and the need to put a strong focus on what constitutes our main distinctive competency ( methodological innovations and processes). As you can also see it we wanted to stay as close to the logo we have been identified with. Despite this change in legal status, IED Afrique and IIED UK will keep close strategic links and will seek to develop more collaborative work in the region. Of course, this is a new challenge for IED Afrique which will have to build its own identity and chose its own path. Fortunately, IIED has kindly accepted to accompany us during a phase a transition by providing advice, institutional support and encouraging collaborative work. We are very optimistic that the experience we have developed through working with an organisation with strong development expertise and high international profile and reputation will be profitable for our new organisation. From a personal stand point, I have enjoyed every single year I have spent working for IIED. I have learned a lot. Despite being based outside the UK, I always had the feeling and the pride of being part of an organisation with very good reputation in our region. On behalf of all my colleagues, I would take to take this opportunity to thank all of you. But this is just an "aurevoir" as we hope to keep enjoying working with you in the future.
