Globally, 1.8 billion people lack access to adequate housing, with over 1 billion living in informal settlements. This worldwide crisis is interlinked with systemic challenges, acting to deepen inequalities, worsen the climate crisis, and limit progress towards achieving and localising the Sustainable Development Goals. Most housing policies and practices ignore the pervasive and persistent nature of housing discrimination, which systematically excludes particular groups from secure and suitable housing.

Over 2023, IIED is developing a programme of work that seeks to advance a housing justice agenda that addresses the twin challenges of growing inequalities and climate change. This will encompass research, capacity development, policy advisory and advocacy, based on local and global partnerships.
