IIED works for social and environmental justice. Our mission is to build a fairer, more sustainable world, using evidence, action and influence in partnership with others. And we are looking for two new trustees to help us achieve that mission.

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We harness the power of our networks – from grassroots communities to multilateral institutions – to mobilise action at local, national and global levels. We work with our partners to influence policy and practice, always keeping our focus on amplifying the views and voices of the countries, communities and people living on the front lines.

We are a global organisation navigating a changing context for international development and research, in a world learning to cope with the impacts of COVID-19 while responding to the climate, biodiversity and inequality crises. Our work is more important and more relevant than ever, and we will continue to innovate, evolve and look for partnerships and initiatives that can make a difference.

Tara Shine, the chair of IIED’s board of trustees, said: “Our board of trustees reflects IIED’s international perspective and ambition. Our trustees contribute actively, bringing their knowledge, experience and judgment to discussions, helping us to work towards a fairer future for all.

“If you are excited by what we do and would like to contribute, we very much look forward to hearing from you.”

Who are we looking for?

Our international board represents all the major regions where we work or have important partnerships. We are looking for two trustees, based and qualified in the UK in law and accountancy and who have experience of working or interest in international environment and development.

We are seeking people with wide-ranging strategic experience who have ideally fulfilled a trustee role in a not-for-profit organisation previously.

The ideal candidates will have a very good understanding of IIED’s area of business, would be able to clearly articulate our mission and values and demonstrate how they can contribute towards steering the organisation through the challenges ahead.

Essential requirements

  • Qualified and based in the UK
  • One trustee vacancy with legal expertise
  • One trustee vacancy with financial expertise, to become treasurer in 2023
  • Ability to display a clear understanding and interest in the mission, values and substance of IIED’s work
  • Experience in strategy and management; exposure to working with boards
  • Understanding of the context within which international NGOs and think tanks operate, including those funded by combinations of government agencies, international institutions, private trusts and foundations, and private sector businesses
  • Understanding of how issues of racism and coloniality have influenced international development, and a commitment to IIED’s drive to become an anti-racist organisation and challenge the inequalities and injustices that continue to pervade the areas in which we work
  • Ability to dedicate sufficient time to the role, a minimum of eight days per year, including attending a two-day meeting in London twice a year in June and December, and membership of the Finance Audit and Risk Assessment committee
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with management and board members, and
  • Ability to work as part of a team taking account of the diversity and different cultures of board members.

We are keen for the board as a whole to reflect the diversity of IIED’s partners, networks and audiences
