In November 2017, IIED, in collaboration with Tanzanian partners HakiMadini and MTL Consulting, successfully conducted a national artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) action dialogue in Geita.

The four-day event brought together around 90 participants, including miners, government officials and representatives from large mining companies and civil society organisations.

The event was informed by a year of intensive research and engagement conducted in collaboration with HakiMadini, MTL Consulting, and HakiRasilimali, and dialogue participants discussed and prioritised immediate actions.

This led to the creation of a multi-stakeholder group known as the Tanzanian ASM learning and leadership group (LLG) to develop a roadmap for reform of the Tanzanian ASM sector.

IIED is now seeking a dynamic, professional and knowledgeable individual to coordinate the activities of the LLG.

The successful candidate will act as executive secretary to the roadmap process, and will be responsible for workshop and meeting coordination (and possibly facilitation); communications outreach and liaison; managing workstreams; managing events and organising field work; writing and disseminating reports, briefings and communication materials; finance management; supporting content development, working with IIED and LLG; fundraising support; monitoring and evaluation support; and administrative support.

In collaboration with IIED, the coordinator will support the LLG in first developing the Tanzanian ASM roadmap to a stage where it can be presented to policymakers for advice, and producing and commissioning specific research, policy analyses, tools and engagements to catalyse change in the ASM sector. The coordinator will keep the LLG and IIED fully informed of progress, constraints, and opportunities on a regular basis.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a candidate who is excited by the opportunity to contribute to a national initiative designed to generate tangible and lasting reform in the Tanzanian mining sector, promoting sustainable development through improved ASM.
