Rachel Hoffmann

Technical officer, IUCN Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group, Natural Resources

A zoologist with 15-plus years’ experience in expanding and strengthening large networks to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness in achieving transformational outcomes for global biodiversity conservation. Her interest is how to improve participatory processes through knowledge sharing, collaboration, amplification of expertise and unification of resources.

Expertise

Strategic oversight and development of large (primarily volunteer) networks to facilitate conservation action; trained facilitator in species conservation planning; skilled in relationship building, interdisciplinary collaborations and science communication; broad-based scientific knowledge in the many diverse issues related to species conservation.

Before IIED

Worked with various organisations, mainly non- and inter-governmental, including IUCN Species Survival Commission, University of Cambridge (Veterinary School), RSPB and BirdLife International.

  • BSc (Hons) zoology, Nottingham University    
  •  MRes in ecology and environmental management, University of York

Current work

Responsible for leading on the delivery of a number of key activities for the Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group (SULi), particularly the establishment, population and maintenance of a sustainable use database, encouraging technical inputs on sustainable use, and assisting with the strategic development and strengthening of SULi to enhance and diversify its activities and engagement.
