Elizabeth Stephen

Elizabeth Stephen is a leader in legal and governance in the international non-governmental organisation (INGO) sector. Most recently she served as director of organisational governance and general counsel at Save the Children, the leading global child rights INGO. She has a record of delivering strategic projects and change management, including leading on the global merger and restructuring of Save the Children, and has extensive experience working with boards, senior leaders and stakeholders in non-profit sectors and in the public sector at the BBC.

Elizabeth worked in private practice at Linklaters in London, King Wood Mallesons in Australia, and in the United States where she is qualified as an attorney. Her areas of expertise include governance, legal and regulatory compliance, commercial and intellectual property law. Elizabeth also serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Warburg Institute at the University of London. She is currently training as a psychoanalyst.

She was appointed as acting chair of IIED's board of trustees in June 2020, ahead of Tara Shine's term beginning in September 2020.
