Alessandra's work focused on the linkages between biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation, with a specific interest in great ape conservation. Her work with the Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG) included the development of networks of poverty-conservation professionals, research, and communication and policy advocacy activities at the international and national level in sub-Saharan Africa.
