Record attendance expected at first-ever virtual D&C Days alongside ‘pivotal’ COP meeting
Development and Climate Days 2021 kicks off today (November 9) with a record number of participants, bringing together grassroots leaders, researchers, development practitioners and policymakers to explore how to build a climate-resilient future for all.

A record number of people are expected to attend this year’s Development and Climate Days (9-10 November), which starts today alongside the vital COP26 UN climate summit.
As of the end of Tuesday morning, 1,152 people had registered to take part in the two-day event, which is being held virtually for the first time.
The aim is to make D&C Days 2021 the most inclusive yet and accessible to all, not just those present in person at COP26 in Glasgow, organisers said. The interactive conference has been designed to span multiple time zones.
As usual, however, it will assemble community representatives, researchers, development practitioners, humanitarians and policymakers from around the world to discuss ‘how to build a climate-resilient future for all’.
COP25 was held in Madrid in December 2019 under the presidency of Chile; D&C Days – founded in 2002 by IIED’s Saleemul Huq – marks its 20th anniversary next year.
Themes
D&C Days 2021 will centre on five ‘evidenced themes’ developed over the past two years. These will provide the backbone to the programme, with conference sessions strategically linked to them.
Being introduced at the opening plenary on Tuesday, the themes are: agriculture and food; early warning, early action; finance for a resilient future; cities and infrastructure; and nature-based solutions.
D&C Days 2021 is a partnership of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre (RCCC), IIED, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Global Resilience Partnership (GRP), the World Bank and Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance; Nourish Scotland also contributed.
IIED is leading or co-leading three of the five themes, on financing a resilient future, establishing resilient cities and infrastructure, and working with nature to build resilience.
In addition to the live sessions, the D&C Days platform will feature a live blog and the schedule features numerous opportunities for networking.
