IIED is looking for a senior research professional to lead the Shaping Sustainable Markets group. This exciting opportunity would be ideal for someone passionate about promoting transitions to sustainable economies and societies and who has a proven track record in leadership and policy research at an international level.

IIED is a policy and action research organisation working at the interface between environment and development action.  We work on a global scale but with a strong orientation to supporting the poorest people, communities and countries to chart paths to sustainable development and prosperity.

This role is based in Shaping Sustainable Markets (SSM), one of the four research groups at IIED, which also hosts the Green Economy Coalition (GEC), an umbrella advocacy network (https://www.greeneconomycoalition.org/). SSM addresses issues which are essential to meet the SDG targets, especially those related to inclusive markets and economic solutions, with a focus on the poor and marginalized. The Group’s work spans a diverse range of critical topics in environment and development, including green and blue economy, informality, extracted and produced commodities, valuation, finance and private sector engagement. 

The role is a permanent senior research and management position and is part of the senior leadership group.   

  • Research activities include leading research and policy outreach in an area central to the Shaping Sustainable Markets group agenda 
  • The Group director responsibilities include leading the development and implementation of the group strategy, managing the group and promoting interdisciplinary work within the group

Applicants will have experience of working in the private sector or on issues related to business and their relationship to environment and development and outstanding experience, achievement and reputation in policy research.

Educated to degree level with a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline you will have proven leadership, mentoring skills and the ability to build teams. Together with excellent fundraising and networking skills and experience you will have excellent communication skills in English and one other relevant international language.
