Leading Africa and climate change expert Fatima Denton delivered the lecture on the theme: Rewriting the narrative on Africa and climate change – a case of "standing knee deep in the river and dying of thirst".

Denton is an internationally known expert in the field of climate change adaptation, sustainable agriculture and policy development. She is a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and is also the director of the special initiatives division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Denton said the time had come for Africa to seize climate change as a business opportunity, and an opportunity that would bring growth, opportunity and job creation.

Denton's lecture was followed by a lively discussion session led by IIED board chair Rebeca Grynspan.
