Hundreds discuss rewriting the narrative on Africa and climate change

Hundreds of policymakers, researchers and academics gathered in London on 20 November to hear climate expert Fatima Denton give IIED's 2014 Barbara Ward Lecture and call for the narrative on Africa and climate change to be rewritten.

News, 20 November 2014

Denton, the director of the special initiatives division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), told her audience that it's time we told the real story about Africa and climate change.

After the lecture, there was a lively question-and-answer session led by IIED board chair Rebeca Grynspan.

Denton's lecture can be also viewed on IIED's YouTube channel.

The event was covered live on IIED's Twitter service, and coverage is available in Storify format - you can scroll through it below.

Denton is an internationally known expert in the field of climate change adaptation, sustainable agriculture and policy development. She is also a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

During the lecture, she said that Africa has been underselling its potential to manage climate change impacts and that, as a result, it is short changing itself out of key business opportunities.
