Development and Climate Days COP16
2010 Development and Climate (D&C) Days event took place from 4 to 5 December at the Cancun Caribe Park Royal Grand in Cancun, Mexico.
D&C Days is an annual event held during the UNFCCC Conference of Parties and organised by IIED in collaboration with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Regional and International Networking Group (RING).
These two day events involved formal presentations of work on adaptation to climate change, and climate change as a development challenge. It also created a platform of networking, provides opportunities to disseminate relevant literature and reports, and to showcase videos of community based adaptation innovative work.
The focus of the event at COP16 was on supporting the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge by practitioners and researchers from developing countries.
This was in recognition of the challenges that developing country researchers face in funding research and publicising research findings; in response to the need to ensure that evidence from the global South is included in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other assessments; and, with the intention of questioning the norms of what is considered 'valid' knowledge to inform policy.
The two day programme included the following sessions:
- Low carbon growth and development cooperation
- Community-based institutions and adaptation
- Adaptation planning
- Communicating climate change
- Lessons from fairtrade
- Evaluating adaptation
- Climate change and forced migration
- Financing adaptation and climate compatible development
The event also included a film festival on climate and development issues, featuring short films from around the world.
