Book summary: Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Change Adaptation: A Review of the Landscape

Article, 06 July 2017

IIED researchers contributed to three chapters in a book exploring the methodological challenges in monitoring and evaluating climate change adaptation.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Change Adaptation: A Review of the Landscape explores the complexities that practitioners and policy makers face as they navigate their way through the many different ways to measure, assess and understand an array of adaptation approaches.

This highly practical book presents findings from the latest research into the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of climate change adaptation and gives expert insight on how to respond to the biggest methodological challenges. The book is particularly timely as countries increase their investments in climate change adaptation and look for learnings to inform future policy and practice.

  • IIED's Susannah Fisher and Neha Rai contribute to the chapter Evaluating Climate Change Adaptation: Learning From Methods in International Development 13. It reviews evaluation methods used in the field of international development to draw lessons for the specific challenges of evaluating climate change adaptation. The chapter concludes that although the methods are available, it is how they are applied that can help address these particular challenges.
  • Tracking Adaptation and Measuring Development in Isiolo County, Kenya 75 is co-authored by IIED's Simon Anderson. This chapter outlines the experiences of testing the feasibility of the Tracking Adaptation and Measuring Development (TAMD) framework in Kenya, and its use in assisting policymakers at the subnational level in adaptation planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • In Meaningful Measurement for Community-Based Adaptation 89, the authors, including IIED's Saleemul Huq, present a new framework for M&E for community-based adaptation, which has applications for general development practice as well as the specificities of climate change adaptation programming.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Change Adaptation: A Review of the Landscape, New Directions for Evaluation, Number 147, is edited by Dennis Bours, Colleen McGinn and Patrick Pringle and published by Wiley. It is the 147th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass and is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.
