Archive of completed 'Money where it matters' projects

IIED works to highlight the importance of and strengthen the opportunities for development and climate finance to flow to those who need it most. This archive page links to past IIED projects that focused on the benefits and challenges of getting money flowing to the local level.

Climate and development finance is crucial for supporting the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, both to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and for societies and economies to adapt to the threat of dangerous climate change.

IIED's 'Money where it matters' programme of work liaises with public and private sector partners in developing countries to strengthen capabilities and make the most vulnerable people's voices inform sustainable development investment decisions. Below are links to our completed projects.

Strengthening the voices of women and young people in shaping local climate action

This project developed tools to enable women and young people to identify and articulate gender transformative priorities in response to climate change in Zanzibar and Northern Tanzania.

Two toolkits were produced to support inclusive climate-resilient planning for cooperatives and rural communities. These were translated into Kiswahili. IIED also produced a Reflect & Act publication exploring the key lessons learnt, and plans for next steps, while a video highlights the work on developing tools for equality in climate change planning in Tanzania.

Breaking down barriers to tenure-positive climate finance

This project explored solutions to remove the barriers that stop climate finance reaching the people most vulnerable to climate change. As a result, IIED published this paper exploring the flows of climate finance within the main international climate funds, to understand how effective they are in getting finance to the local level and what design features enable or prevent local financing.
