Small-scale producers in the globalised market
The Latin American Learning Network members of the Knowledge Programme ‘Small producer agency in the globalised market’ convened in Lima from 12 to 16 September. They organised and participated in a series of meetings and events in conjunction with various prestigious organisations. The highlight of the programme was the International Forum ‘Small-scale producers: Actors in Globalised Markets and Food Security?’ on 14 September, organised by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
Learning Network partners Hivos, IIED and Mainumby were joined by Rimisp (Centro Latinoamericano para el Desarrollo Rural) through its Project on Rural Development with Cultural Identity, the Secretaría General de la Comunidad Andina, and the Asociación Peruana de Gastronomía (APEGA), to make this a successful and stimulating event.
University faculty members and external speakers from Argentine and Peruvian institutions debated such issues as the challenges faced by small-scale producers in Latin America, the role of informal networks, and products and services with cultural and territorial identity. They were received enthusiastically by the large audience which included many young students.
The Global Learning Network work was presented at this event and Network members from Uganda, India, Bolivia, Guatemala and Nicaragua brought challenging insights on topics related to their current work on policies, agency and markets. Work on these themes has engaged members in a knowledge sharing and influencing process in their countries and regions. National documents and a Latin America synthesis will be published by the end of 2011.
Video recordings of the event are available in Spanish:

Diego Munoz, of Mainumby Nacurutú (convenor of the Learning Network), and Network members Alberto Monterosso (Guatemala), Satender Arya (India) and Morrison Rwakakamba (Uganda) responded to questions about small producer agency.
