This is the Closing Editorial, written by the guest editors, to the PLA special issue on experiences of face to face learning referred to as immersions.

Immersions are opportunities for development professionals to spend a period of time living with and learning from a poor family. In this closing article, the authors review `good practice' in relation to immersions while also noting the difficulties in reaching any meaningful assessment of their long-term impact. The authors discuss the ethical dilemmas raised and argue that the next phase of immersion practice should find more creative ways of letting the voices of the hosts be heard.
