The May 2009 Update by the Forest Governance Learning Group (FGLG) is now available.

The report contains news on recent activities and impacts.

Over the last year, FGLG's 10 country teams have intensified their efforts to improve forest governance in Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Indonesia, India and Vietnam.

Impacts of this work have included:

• A surge of claims for control of forests by communities under the Forest Rights Act in India
• New policy to legitimise and support community forestry at district level in Indonesia
• Government strategy, initiatives and tools for small forestry enterprises in South Africa
• Intense debate and a search for constructive solutions for the charcoal trade in Malawi
• Key 'hooks' for more locally beneficial forest management in the Voluntary Partnership Agreement on forest governance signed in 2008 between Ghana and the EC

Also included in this Update is a summary of governance tactics applied by FGLG teams, examples of some of the constructive governance 'gossip’ and networking that takes place within FGLG and plans for a new phase of work.
