Gender, land and decentralisation

About this project

Background

This work is funded by our programme ‘Making decentralisation work’. The broad objective of this overarching programme is to respond to policy change in many countries in the African Sahel which has seen the transfer of certain decision-making powers and resources away from central government to elected local government bodies.

A key element to ensuring that decision-making at the local level is carried out equitably and sustainably is to build understanding of the interests and concerns of marginalised groups and local level capacity to discuss and analysis these concerns. As a result, this strand of action research specifically studies the challenges posed by gender disparities with regard to access to land and natural resources.

Location

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger

Aims

  • To document learning, change and experience on how access to land and natural resources is evolving in Mali and Niger.

  • To develop tools and approaches to facilitate discussion and debate at local, national and international level of the effects of gender inequity on realising sustainable development goals.
