Regional Partner — MMSD Australia

The Australian Minerals and Energy Environment Foundation (Ameef) executed MMSD activities in Australia. Ameef was appointed following agreement at a stakeholder workshop in December 2000 and began operations in February 2001, building on a regional scoping exercise and stakeholder workshop held previously.

Ameef has now wound up. All documents relating to the MMSD Australia process have now been transferred to the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and are now available in the publications section of the ICMM website.

All materials produced through the MMSD Australia process are available in the publications section of the ICMM website

Structure

A regional coordinator was responsible for executing, planning and managing day-to-day activities in the Australian context. Also, MMSD Australia had a Regional Reference Group in place, which provided strategic direction and supervision. Members hold a range of perspectives through representation from industry, government, non-governmental organisations, research centers, trades unions and professional bodies.

Research and Participation

MMSD Australia defined a Project Activity Plan setting out regional project objectives, anticipated project outputs, specific activities in key areas, project time-lines and milestones, project budgets and other resources, and reporting, monitoring and evaluation arrangements. It also conducted its first stakeholder workshop in December 2000, attended by over 70 participants, in Melbourne with video links to Brisbane and Perth.

Following stakeholder consultation, key regional research priorities were identified. These are: biodiversity conservation, management of mineral wealth, industry-based initiatives in sustainable development, and stakeholder engagement. Following a call for research proposals, regional baseline assessment and research reports were commissioned.

MMSD Australia's Regional Report is now available.
