Project CoordinatorThe Project Coordinator for MMSD was Richard Sandbrook. He had overall responsibility for bringing together the three components of the governance structure, the Sponsors Group, the Assurance Group and the Work Group. He worked closely with the WBCSD to ensure MMSD retained a high level of independence, openness, and equity, throughout the project life. Richard has over twenty-five years' experience in the fields of conservation and environmental sciences, and has broad experience in development issues. He has been involved in the financial and personnel management of a wide range of practical environmental projects, both in Europe and in developing countries, concerned with the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors, environmental economics and urban poverty. He is also experienced in the affairs and procedures of bilateral and multilateral donor agencies. Recently he has worked closely with private sector firms from the mining, oil and gas sectors and the forestry and paper sectors. He has been a founder member of several organisations including Friends of the Earth International, Earthscan Publications Ltd., UNEP-UK and the European Environment Bureau as well as co-founder of Friends of the Earth (UK). In 1976, he joined the London office of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED); first to direct a marine programme, then as Vice President for Policy (1983), Executive Director for Europe (1986), and Executive Director overall (1989 - Aug 1999). He has served on a variety of Boards and committees, including the UK Round Table for Sustainable Development, the IUCN Council for Western Europe and the Earth Council Institute Costa Rica, and has served on several government delegations to intergovernmental conferences and regularly attends OECD meetings. |
