Project Background

MMSD produces a variety of project documents to support all aspects of its process. The key materials are available through the following links:

MMSD's Principles of Stakeholder Engagement seek to provide a basic set of guidelines for constructive and open dialogue.

Eight Challenges and Opportunities - Draft (Spanish and Russian versions also available). Reflecting ten months of participatory analysis, these eight issues will be the focus of MMSD's efforts in the coming months and from where its main outcomes will emerge.

Project Governance charters:
Assurance Group charter

Sponsors Group charter
MMSD Work Group charter

What is MMSD Producing? (Spanish and Russian versions also available). An update on the direction in which the project is going and what it foresees for its following and final year.

Topics for Analysis outlines the broad themes MMSD plans to address and the analytical priorities and processes we intend to use. It was intended to encourage specific input and comment on these ideas from all interested parties.

MMSD Work Plan is a culmination of a series of planning documents designed to define the MMSD Project in operational terms. It provides a skeleton outline of the project: a brief description of the way it is organised, milestones, and responsibilities.

Guidelines for Regional Partnerships establishes a clear vision of regional partnerships and their role in the MMSD process. The key objectives of this document are to aid institutions which might be potential regional partners in the MMSD process to evaluate and submit proposals, and to inform all others interested in the partnership process so that they may better understand, evaluate, and comment on it.

A Guide to MMSD describes the conditions for the Project’s success and lays out the governance structures at global and regional levels as well as at the level of individual activities. It also explains the organisation of the Project Centre and the means through which research and analysis will be undertaken.

The Briefing Document provides a readable explanation of MMSD - what it is and what it hopes to produce - as of the 1st of October 2000. Intended to complement A Guide to MMSD, it explains the organisation of the Project Centre and its activities, the roles and management of the regional centres, and the principle products and outcomes of MMSD.

The Scoping Report proposes the scope of MMSD as a two-year process of participatory analysis to explore the role of mining in the transition to sustainable development, and suggests a structure and budget for carrying this out.

MMSD: A Process of Consultation is a document designed to outline the ways in which the MMSD Project has conducted its activities during the two years of its existence.
