External Events

In addition to the various regional forums, MMSD also attended, and in some cases organised, a number of other events to facilitate stakeholder access to the Draft Report. Some of these events are listed below.

March 5-6

Sustainable Minerals Roundtable (SMR) Meeting
Washington DC, USA

MMSD attended the SMR meeting in March. The vision of the Roundtable is a future in which the capacities of mineral and energy systems meet the demands of current and later generations, while maintaining or enhancing environmental, social and economic systems.

The SMR is developing national level indicators of sustainability for mineral resources, including areas such as Environmental, Legal and Institutional, Socio-Economic and Mineral Availability. This meeting reviewed these indicators and began to consider others. The Indicators are intended to describe, display or predict statuses and trends of aspects of sustainable development in the sector.

Topics to be discussed by this panel included 'Is The Industry Ready for a Sustainable Development Code' and 'Transparency and Governance in the Management of Mineral Wealth.' This meeting provided an opportunity for attendees to comment on, debate, and contribute to MMSD's Consultation Draft.

Other panels at the forum included those organised around the themes of 'Mining And People,' 'Creating a Positive Investment Climate' and 'The Role of Geoscience in Creating Investment.' Among those joining MMSD on the Organizing Committee were the World Bank, UNEP, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Natural Resources Canada.

World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)
Prep Com III
New York, USA

MMSD organised a side event at the recent World Summit for Sustainable Development PrepCom III in New York. This event gave MMSD a chance to set out some of the preliminary findings of the Draft Report and gave the audience a chance to question the MMSD participants about these findings and the MMSD process in general.

MMSD convened a panel for the side event that included Wanda Hoskin from UNEP, Peter Eggleston from the Global Mining Initiative, MMSD regional partner Daniel Limpitlaw from University of Witwatersrand, and MMSD Assurance Group members Namakau Kaingu (SADC Women in Mining Trust) and Manuel Pulgar-Vidal (Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental).

MMSD Project Coordinator Richard Sandbrook noted that whilst the initial implementation goals proposed by the MMSD Draft Report recognised social, environmental and economic issues, the MMSD process revealed a need to incorporate governance at a fundamental level.
