Resettlement and Displacement

Related MMSD Reports

Issues related to mining-induced displacement and resettlement pose important risks to the minerals sector. These risks include joblessness, homelessness, marginalisation, food insecurity, loss of common lands and resources, increased health risks, social disarticulation, the disruption of formal educational activities, and the loss of civil and human rights. Failure to lessen these risks may bring about more acute poverty levels than those suffered before displacement.

Research and experience has shown that mere compensation may not adequately restore and improve the income levels and livelihood standards of displaced peoples. MMSD working papers examine possible solutions to avoid resettlement and displacement undermining the minerals sector contribution to sustainable development
