This effort was aimed at deepening the understanding of the obstacles which have prevented some developing countries from using mineral revenues as an effective catalyst to economic and social development, the so-called 'resource trap.' It examined whether more appropriate public policies and more effective management of mineral wealth can overcome these obstacles. At the community level, it examined how to promote effective and long-term sustainable economic development and how to facilitate appropriate backward and forward linkages. The work centred on case studies undertaken by MMSD regional partners and organisations in other regions. The work was discussed at a large workshop in which a broad range of stakeholders participated.
