MMSD hosted an experts' meeting on issues related to human rights in the mining and minerals sector on 6 September 2001 in Berlin. A draft paper prepared for MMSD, "Human Rights and the Minerals Industry", provided a starting point for the debate. The role of international human rights law, practical experiences from companies, the issues surrounding partnerships between companies and human rights organisations and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights were discussed. The meeting also pinpointed existing initiatives at policy level, further research needs and potential follow up activities.
