MMSD and Transparency International brought together experts from companies, research institutions, academics, NGOs and international organisations for a discussion on corruption issues on 7 September 2001 in Berlin. A survey of corruption issues in the mining and mineral sector was prepared for the meeting. The OECD guidelines and the issues surrounding the use of legal tax reform as a tool to fight corruption, among others, were discussed in an effort to explore options for all actors including governments, companies and NGOs. Similarly, case studies from companies were presented. The meeting aimed to provide insight on the range of perspectives on this issue and identify existing initiatives at policy level and in practice. Further research and information needs and potential follow-up activities were also discussed.
