COMMENTS ON PROJECT WORK PLAN

The MMSD Working Group has prepared a Draft of the Project WORK PLAN for evaluation and comment by all interested stakeholders, as well as the Assurance Group, the Sponsors, the IIED, the WBCSD, and anyone with interest in the Mining and Minerals sector.

The 43-page text, with the attached OPERATING BUDGET, will be our guiding framework over the life of the MMSD Project.

The WORK PLAN has several main objectives that include:

  • Providing a clear plan of work, milestones and resources needed.

  • Continuing a process of developing operational plans to fulfill objectives outlined in previous documents.

  • Providing a management tool to act as guide as the Project becomes more active and complex.

  • Informing all stakeholders in detail of Project plans and intentions.

One of the basic presumptions of the Preface in the WORK PLAN is that the choice in this Project is not IF there will be a transition to a more sustainable society but whether that transition is managed or simply forced through events.

One of the key requirements for effective work in this very broad and very diverse subject is the need for collaboration of many players recognizing that each has a distinct view sustainable development, and the role of mining and minerals.

There are four distinct phases in the WORK PLAN: The Start-up, Operations, Presentation and Implementation.

The WORK PLAN assesses each of the four Project Elements, which were Stakeholder Engagement; Research and Analysis; Communications and Information; and Implementation.

The MMSD project will only be successful if it is highly visible and can engage many viewpoints to participate in a highly controversial subject. The role of the Communications branch is clearly defined in the WORK PLAN but is nevertheless open to further evaluation and suggestions from interested parties.

Comments and Ideas Needed

There are over 100 minerals mined in the world by a wide variety of techniques. They are used in a thousand ways. After complex refining, fabrication and processing they are ultimately manufactured, used and recycled.

The environmental, social, cultural and governance issues emanating from this complex web of activities are so diverse that no one, including this project, is capable of dealing with them all.

We must therefore proceed by identifying and targeting key problems and issues on which our engagement, research and analysis can proceed.

The question is, therefore, which are these issues?

We are gathering suggestions and ideas on the key questions related to Mining and Minerals. Each contribution makes a difference and may guide us in our research. If you have an idea, a question or a suggestion, please join in the discussion. Each contribution is important to us and to all stakeholders and will be carefully considered by our staff and our Assurance Group.

We have compiled many of the comments received to date in a document entitled:

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK and TOPICS FOR ANALYSIS.

We have been consulting intensively with a variety of stakeholders as we try to gather as wide a range of ideas as possible.

If you have any ideas on where we should be heading with our research, then get them to us as quickly as possible because the sooner they are received, the sooner the more useful they will be.

The Work Group is diligently assessing and evaluating many suggestions, ideas and criticisms coming to us from a wide variety of interest groups including governments, NGOs, corporations, trade unions, Aboriginals and the general public from around the globe.

We plan to present a Draft Proposed Research Agenda prior to the next meeting of the Assurance Group in late August. That document will be made publicly available.

The questions so far are very challenging. For sending your comments, ideas and suggestions, or to receive the periodic Project Bulletin, contact us at:

The MMSD is an ambitious project that needs the active involvement of ALL stakeholders.
