IIED Sahel becomes independent organisation IED Afrique
The High Commission of Canada and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) will celebrate the launch of IIED's new partner IED Afrique on Tuesday, February 28 at Canada House in London. Previously known as IIED Sahel, a branch of IIED in Dakar Senegal, the organisation has been transformed to become IED Afrique -an independent organisation focused on promoting innovative ways of making development fairer and more sustainable. "IIED works by building effective partnerships with organisations around the world," said Camilla Toulmin, Director of IIED. "We look forward to continuing the warm and long-standing relations of collaboration with our colleagues in Dakar. Its a privilege and pleasure to celebrate the launch of IED Afrique." For the past two years, IIED Sahel has been engaged in a strategic process aimed at defining its priorities and becoming independent. With support from IIED's Drylands Programme and the institute as a whole, IIED Sahel became IED Afrique (Innovations, Environnement et Développement) on September 1, 2005. "Our new challenge as IED Afrique is to strengthen our identity and map out a new path," said the organisation's Director Bara Gu è ye . "Our close links with IIED provide an excellent base on which to expand our activities and establish a strong reputation for good work that brings environment and development together. Nowhere is this more important than in the West African Sahel" Guèye joined IIED in 1993 to set up its Sahel programme in Dakar, Senegal. Since then, the organisation has worked primarily in the areas of participatory methods, decentralisation, and natural resource management. Despite the change in legal status, IED Afrique and IIED in the UK will keep close strategic links and will develop a broader programme of collaborative work in the Sahel region. During IED Afrique's transition phase, IIED has agreed to aid the newly formed organisation by providing advice, institutional support, and encouraging project collaboration. "We are very optimistic that the experience we have developed through working with IIED, whose development expertise and high international profile and reputation will be of great benefit for our new organisation," said Gu è ye. The launch and celebration of IED Afrique will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at Canada House (Cockspur entrance) in Trafalgar Square, London SW1Y 5BJ.For more details, contact: Sarah Henson Copyright © 2005 International Institute for Environment and Development. |
